Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

The Safe and Sound Protocol, or SSP, is a listening-based intervention designed to support nervous system regulation, emotional balance, and a greater sense of safety and connection. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and based on Polyvagal Theory, SSP uses specially filtered music listened to through headphones with the support of a trained provider.

At Blue Rabbit Therapy, SSP is offered in a gentle, paced, and collaborative way. Before beginning, we’ll talk through your goals, stress level, sensory needs, and what support will help you feel grounded. Sessions can be adjusted to your nervous system rather than rushed or forced.

SSP is informed by Polyvagal Theory, clinical research through experimental and pilot studies, and anecdotal reports from providers and clients. While research is still growing, SSP may be supportive for people experiencing stress responses, trauma-related activation, anxiety, sensory sensitivity, or difficulty feeling calm and connected.

You can learn more through the official SSP website.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during SSP?

You listen to specially filtered music through headphones while noticing how your body responds. You do not have to talk through difficult material while listening. The focus is on helping your nervous system receive cues of safety in a supported way.

How long does SSP take?

The protocol is typically completed over multiple listening sessions. The pace can be adjusted based on your needs, comfort level, and nervous system response.

What might I feel during or after listening?

Some clients feel calmer, sleepier, more connected, emotional, energized, or more aware of body sensations. Others notice subtle changes over time. We will monitor your comfort and adjust the pace as needed.

Is SSP a replacement for therapy?

No. SSP is not a replacement for therapy, medical care, or crisis support. It may be used alongside therapy as part of a broader plan for nervous system regulation and emotional wellness.

Is SSP right for me?

SSP may be helpful for clients experiencing anxiety, trauma-related activation, sensory sensitivity, emotional dysregulation, or chronic overwhelm. We’ll discuss fit during a consultation.
