Somatic Modalities
Somatic Modalities
While some traditional therapeutic approaches, such as CBT, focus almost exclusively on the mind, somatic modalities also incorporate body-oriented techniques, such as body-based grounding exercises or breathwork. With the somatic approach, you will explore the physical sensations that accompany your thoughts and feelings in addition to talking about your experiences and concerns. A key principle of this approach is that what happens to you isn’t just stored in your mind — it’s also stored in your body; your experiences impact you on a cellular level. Developing an awareness of your body is the first step toward creating lasting changes. Somatic modalities can be especially helpful in treating PTSD, anxiety, addiction, intimacy issues, grief, depression, and chronic pain.
