Nervous system regulation enables us to respond to stressful situations in a more calm and flexible way by giving us the tools to move more comfortably between different states of arousal. In other words, it makes us more adaptable, which in turn gives us an improved sense of agency and decreases the likelihood of being overwhelmed by stressors. In contrast, when we are dysregulated, our nervous systems are imbalanced, which can hinder our problem-solving abilities and lead to symptoms such as anxiety, nausea, panic, agitation, moodiness, insomnia, and sweating. In therapy, a variety of techniques can be used to help you improve the regulation of your nervous system.
